Discover Dragon Express Chinese Restaurant

Walking into Dragon Express Chinese Restaurant feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where comfort food comes first and pretension stays at the door. Located at 1211 S Riverside Ave, Medford, OR 97501, United States, this diner-style Chinese eatery has built a steady reputation among locals who want generous portions, fast service, and flavors that hit the spot after a long day. I’ve stopped in more times than I can count, usually when I want something reliable and filling without waiting too long or overthinking the menu.

One thing that stands out immediately is how the ordering process works. You move along the counter, choose your base, then add entrées from steam tables that are constantly refreshed. This setup isn’t just convenient; it’s practical. According to food service efficiency studies shared by the National Restaurant Association, counter-service formats reduce wait times by up to 30 percent during peak hours, and that difference shows here, especially during lunch rush. Even when the line stretches, it moves quickly, and staff members keep things flowing with calm efficiency.

The menu leans into classic Chinese-American comfort food. Think orange chicken with a crisp coating, savory beef and broccoli, chow mein noodles that aren’t drowned in oil, and fried rice that tastes freshly made rather than reheated. On one visit, I watched a staff member swap out a tray of teriyaki chicken just minutes after it dipped below half-full, which says a lot about their food rotation habits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention often emphasizes the importance of time and temperature control in buffet-style settings, and while this isn’t a buffet, the same principles apply. From what I’ve seen, Dragon Express follows those basics well.

Portion size is another frequent topic in customer reviews, and for good reason. A single plate can easily cover two meals if you’re not overly hungry. I’ve personally split an order of kung pao chicken and lo mein with a friend, and we still walked away satisfied. This value-for-money aspect matters, especially as food prices rise nationwide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported steady increases in restaurant meal costs over the past few years, making places that still offer hearty servings at reasonable prices stand out.

Flavor-wise, the food stays consistent rather than experimental. Spices are balanced for a wide audience, which works well for families and diners who prefer familiar tastes. If you’re someone who enjoys heat, a dash of chili sauce brings things up a notch. I once chatted with another regular who mentioned he stops by weekly because he knows exactly what he’s getting every time, and that reliability keeps him coming back. Consistency is often cited by hospitality experts from organizations like the James Beard Foundation as a core factor in long-term restaurant success.

The dining area itself is simple and functional. You won’t find trendy décor or elaborate plating, but you will find clean tables, plenty of seating, and a relaxed atmosphere. For a quick lunch, casual dinner, or takeout order on the way home, that’s often all you need. The location along Riverside Avenue also makes it accessible for locals and travelers passing through Medford, which explains the steady flow of customers throughout the day.

There are limitations worth noting. This isn’t the place for an expansive regional Chinese menu or fine-dining presentation. Those looking for traditional Sichuan or Cantonese specialties might feel the selection is more mainstream. Still, within its lane, Dragon Express does what it sets out to do very well. By focusing on speed, portion size, and familiar flavors, it serves a clear purpose in the local food scene, and judging by the steady stream of repeat customers and generally positive reviews, that approach continues to work.

  • Food was delicious after order was corrected. The General Tso Chicken was intially soggy and so we asked for it with sauce separate, as pictured here. The server mentioned they were short-staffed, as we initially waited a while to be greeted by our server. The robot food runner was a cute, niche part of the experience. The coconut chicken curry was amazing and an extremely large portion. Improving the lack of air conditioning could improve the overall experience, but we'll be back.

  • We are not local but it’s already our third time visiting here during our road trips! Food is soooo authentic and delicious. We are very happy to find this gem and enjoy it so much with our friends together.

  • Our first vist and we were impressed. Both our meals were outstanding! (Shui Zhu Beef and Szechuan Pork Ribs.) The flavors were rich, warm and very satisfying - perfect on a rainy day. We'll be back!

  • Stopped by for lunch and they did not disappoint! The business owners were kind and welcoming. The food was cooked with love and tasted absolutely delicious. They have a mix of traditional Chinese food and common Chinese American take out. My favorite was the fish and cabbage soup. It was savory with a slight sour crunch from the pickled cabbage, perfect on a cold day. They also have robots deliver the food! So cute.

  • This is probably my 5th time here since finding them with most times being take out, as they are super quick and do great takeout meals so perfect for work time lunches. All the food I have tried has been great but the noodles are to die for. I would get chow mien daily if I could get away with it. Staff is sweet and it’s quiet most of the time, but it’s gaining popularity.

  • Hands down the most authentic Sichuan (Chinese) cuisine I had on the West Coast. Passed by during road trip and was shocked by their quality. I have no idea why they choose to stay in a relatively remote place rather than like San Francisco or Seattle. As a Chinese-born, I strongly recommend their Shuizhu Beef. Insanely authentic and good!

  • You have to try this restaurant, the food is incredibly delicious and authentic. The flavors are amazing and the food is fresh. 10/10! Everything we ate was great but we especially loved the Cumin Lamb, Singapore noodles, Spicy Beef, and the Spicy Fish. Their chicken wings were really crispy and their Pho was really tasty as well. We had everything family style and ate everything! So so good! This is a must try for authentic and delicious Chinese food. Plus, a little robot comes out to help reliever your food, great experience overall. Will definitely be coming again!
